Refractive lens exchange for presbyopiaSwap your natural lens for a multifocal IOL — a long-term fix for reading glasses. Here's what it costs across destinations, who it's for, and why Colombia leads on value.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), or lens replacement, uses the same technique as cataract surgery but is done electively to correct refractive error — most often presbyopia (the age-related loss of near focus that sends people reaching for reading glasses in their 40s and 50s).
By replacing the natural lens with a multifocal or extended-depth-of-focus IOL, RLE can free patients from both distance and reading glasses, and it removes any future risk of developing cataracts in that lens. It's a popular choice for people over 45 whose prescriptions are beyond the ideal range for laser correction.
RLE is best for patients over 45 with presbyopia or high prescriptions who want a permanent, glasses-reducing solution and aren't ideal laser candidates.

The surgery is technically the same; RLE is done electively to correct vision before a cataract forms, while cataract surgery treats an already-clouded lens.
With a well-chosen multifocal or EDOF lens, many patients become largely glasses-free, though some use readers for fine print. Your surgeon sets realistic expectations.
Correct — once your natural lens is replaced with an artificial IOL, that lens cannot develop a cataract.
Premium-lens RLE in the US can run $4,000–$6,000 per eye. Abroad it's typically half that, using the same lens technology — a meaningful saving for a bilateral procedure.
