Flapless surface laser correction

PRK Abroad

Surface-based laser reshaping — ideal for thinner corneas or active lifestyles. Here's what it costs across destinations, who it's for, and why Colombia leads on value.

What is PRK?

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) reshapes the cornea using the same excimer laser as LASIK, but without creating a flap. Instead, the surgeon gently removes the thin outer epithelial layer, which regenerates over a few days.

Because there's no flap, PRK is often preferred for patients with thinner corneas, dry eyes, or high-impact lifestyles (athletes, military, manual workers). The trade-off is a slightly longer initial recovery, but the long-term visual outcomes are equivalent to LASIK.

Who is it for?

PRK suits people whose corneas are too thin for LASIK, who have certain corneal surface irregularities, or who want to avoid flap-related considerations entirely.

PRK — frequently asked

Why choose PRK over LASIK?

PRK avoids creating a corneal flap, which makes it a strong option for thinner corneas and for people in contact sports or physically demanding jobs. Your surgeon decides based on corneal mapping.

Is the recovery really longer?

The first 3–5 days involve more discomfort and blurriness while the surface heals, and full visual stabilization can take a few weeks. The final result matches LASIK.

How long should I plan to stay abroad?

Plan for about a week so your surgeon can remove the protective contact lens and confirm healing before you fly home.

Is PRK cheaper than LASIK abroad?

Pricing is usually similar or slightly lower. The decision should be driven by candidacy, not cost.
