Minimally invasive keyhole correctionSmall-incision lenticule extraction — the newest flapless laser technique. Here's what it costs across destinations, who it's for, and why Colombia leads on value.
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the most recent generation of laser vision correction. A single femtosecond laser creates a small lens-shaped piece of tissue (a lenticule) inside the cornea, which the surgeon removes through a tiny 2–4mm incision — no flap, no surface removal.
The keyhole approach preserves more corneal nerves and biomechanical strength, which can mean less post-op dry eye and a gentler recovery. SMILE is particularly well-suited to moderate-to-high myopia with astigmatism.
SMILE is ideal for nearsighted patients with astigmatism who want a minimally invasive option and a lower dry-eye risk profile.

SMILE uses one laser and a tiny incision instead of a corneal flap, preserving more of the cornea's structural integrity and surface nerves.
No — it requires a Zeiss VisuMax platform and specific surgeon certification. We confirm a clinic actually performs SMILE before recommending it for you.
Yes — most SMILE patients see well within a day or two, similar to LASIK, with potentially less dry eye.
SMILE is primarily used for myopia and astigmatism. For hyperopia, LASIK or a lens-based option is usually recommended.
